Telangana cinema ticket pricing and ‘Toxic’ release

The Telangana government has implemented new regulations regarding cinema ticket pricing, including the creation of a ‘Special Theatre’ category. This category allows single-screen theatres with advanced technology, such as 4K projection and surround sound, to charge rates comparable to multiplexes. To maintain affordability, the government mandated that 25% of seating capacity in every theatre must remain as non-premium seats. Following these structural changes, the government approved a temporary price hike specifically for the release of the film ‘Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups’. For a 10-day period from August 26 to September 4, single-screen theatres may charge an additional Rs 50 per ticket, while multiplexes and special theatres can increase prices by Rs 100. This approved pricing includes GST and applies to five regular shows per day. As part of this specific approval, the film’s producers, KVN Productions and Monster Mind Creations (LLP), are required to contribute Rs 1 crore to the Telugu Film Industry Employees’ Welfare Committee. Additionally, theatres must screen short films or advertisements raising awareness about cybercrime and the dangers of drugs.

Following its August 26, 2026, release, the film—directed by Geethu Mohandas—has been described as an action drama exploring themes of power, crime, and family loyalty. The narrative follows a gangster named Raya and his son, Tikat, with Yash playing both roles. Critics have noted Yash’s ability to portray different energies across generations. The film remains one of India’s most expensive productions, with an estimated budget of approximately ₹500 crore. While early reviews were mixed regarding the screenplay, the film has seen significant momentum, with advance bookings and all-India gross collections generating substantial industry interest.
