Telangana officials target 140 million units of daily thermal power
Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka has directed energy officials to increase daily thermal power generation to 140 million units (MU) to prevent shortages. This target aims to meet rising electricity demand for agricultural and domestic use during the upcoming Rabi and summer seasons, particularly as the El Niño effect threatens to reduce hydel power generation.
Currently, average daily thermal generation stands at approximately 91 MU, with recent peaks reaching 118 MU. To support this increase, an alternative coal supply arrangement has been established with Coal India Limited to ensure uninterrupted operations at the Yadadri Thermal Power Plant starting in November. The Yadadri plant has four 800-MW units currently generating electricity, while a fifth unit was recently synchronized with the grid.
Additionally, the government is considering a One-Time Settlement (OTS) scheme to help closed industries clear pending electricity dues. Officials have also been instructed to recover outstanding debts owed by various government departments to power sector organizations, including Singareni Collieries Company Limited and TGGenco.
