Telangana energy sector developments
Overview
The Telangana government is pursuing multiple strategies to manage and expand the state’s power supply. In mid-October 2026, the Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation Limited (TGREDCO) issued a tender for 2,000 MW of firm and dispatchable renewable energy (FDRE-RTC). This initiative requires developers to integrate energy storage systems and meet specific demand fulfillment ratios over 25-year power purchase agreements.
Concurrently, officials are addressing immediate electricity demand concerns. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka has directed a target increase in daily thermal power generation to 140 million units to mitigate potential shortages during the upcoming Rabi and summer seasons, especially as the El Niño effect may impact hydel power. To support this, an alternative coal supply arrangement has been established with Coal India Limited for the Yadadri Thermal Power Plant. Additionally, the government is exploring a One-Time Settlement scheme for closed industries and seeking to recover outstanding debts owed to power sector organizations.
