Telangana Reservoirs Rise, State Reviews Irrigation Water Releases
Heavy inflows into Telangana’s major reservoirs, including Srisailam, the Sriramsagar Project (SRSP) and Nizamsagar, have lifted water levels and revived farmer hopes for the Kharif and upcoming Rabi seasons. The State Level Integrated Water Planning and Management Committee, chaired by the Engineer‑in‑Chief of the Irrigation Department, will meet to assess storage, forecast rainfall and decide on water allocations, giving priority to drinking needs before irrigation releases.
SRSP now holds about 38.8 tmc ft of water, roughly half its 80.5 tmc ft capacity, while Nizamsagar’s storage has risen to 9.98 tmc ft. Inflows from the Godavari and its tributaries total over 26 tmc ft since June 1, with water being released into the Kakatiya Main Canal and the Mission Bhagiratha scheme for municipal supply. Officials estimate that an additional 40 tmc ft at SRSP could support limited Kharif irrigation, but otherwise water may be conserved for drinking and early Rabi use.
