Telangana Godavari water management

Overview

In early August, Telangana’s irrigation minister inspected the Sriramsagar, Kadem and Sripada Yellampally projects after the first significant Godavari inflows of the monsoon season. He pledged to maximise the use of Godavari water for irrigation and drinking, announced a decision on releasing water from the Sriramsagar Project within three days, and highlighted desilting as a priority because silt had reduced the reservoir’s designed capacity.

A few days later, heavy inflows raised the levels of major reservoirs such as Sriramsagar, Srisailam and Nizamsagar. The State Level Integrated Water Planning and Management Committee convened to assess storage, forecast rainfall and allocate water. Drinking needs were placed ahead of irrigation releases, with limited water earmarked for the Kharif season and early Rabi use, while excess flow was directed to municipal supply schemes.
