Telangana sanctions Rs. 120 crore for Singur drinking water

The Telangana government has sanctioned Rs. 120 crore to establish alternative drinking water arrangements in Singur and surrounding districts. This measure aims to address potential shortages caused by the impact of El Niño, particularly in Sangareddy, Medak, Kamareddy, and Nizamabad, where water levels in the Singur reservoir have dropped below dead storage levels.

Panchayat Raj, Rural Development and Rural Water Supply Minister Seethakka announced the decision following a teleconference with Mission Bhagiratha and public health engineers. In addition to the primary allocation, the government has approved Rs. 1 crore each for immediate drinking water needs in other districts.

Minister Seethakka directed officials to identify vulnerable villages and areas with depleted groundwater levels to prepare alternative supply plans. Instructions include utilizing local water sources, such as hand pumps and wells, and renting borewells or arranging water tankers where necessary. The Minister also emphasized the importance of water conservation awareness programs and regular monitoring of reservoir storage.
