Telefónica and IQM to install quantum computer in Madrid
Telefónica and IQM Quantum Computers have partnered to install an IQM Spark quantum computer at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. The system is expected to be operational before the end of 2026.
This installation marks the first quantum computer in the Community of Madrid and the third deployed in Spain, following two previous units provided by the same partners to the Galicia Supercomputing Center (CESGA). The hardware is designed as an all-in-one solution to support research, education, and early-stage technological development.
The computer will provide direct access to quantum hardware for universities, hospitals, research centers, and startups. These institutions will be able to develop, program, and test quantum algorithms, with the goal of eventually transforming them into high-impact industrial applications. The initiative aims to strengthen regional technological sovereignty and foster a local quantum ecosystem to benefit the scientific community and the regional economy.
