Telefónica and IQM quantum computing deployment in Madrid

Overview

Telefónica and the Finnish firm IQM Quantum Computers have partnered to install the first quantum computer in the Community of Madrid. The system, an IQM Spark model, is scheduled for installation at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) before the end of 2026.

This project represents the third deployment of a quantum system in Spain via this partnership, following two previous installations at the Galicia Supercomputing Center (CESGA). The initiative is intended to support research, education, and early-stage development by providing universities, hospitals, research centers, and startups with direct access to hardware for testing algorithms and exploring commercial use cases in sectors such as healthcare and security.

The collaboration aims to foster a local quantum ecosystem, attract technical talent, and strengthen regional and European technological sovereignty.
