Tema Oil Refinery receives first 950,000 barrels of Sankofa crude
The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has received its first shipment of approximately 950,000 barrels of light sweet crude oil from Ghana’s Sankofa-Gye Nyame field. The cargo, supplied by the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) via the vessel Sonangol Cazenga, was delivered on September 25, 2026, under a commercial agreement between the two state entities.
This delivery aims to strengthen the link between Ghana’s upstream petroleum production and its domestic refining capabilities. GNPC Chief Executive Kwame Ntow Amoah stated that the arrangement creates a dependable domestic market for Ghanaian crude and helps retain more value within the local economy. He noted that GNPC has approximately eight to ten similar crude cargoes available annually.
TOR Managing Director Edmond Kombat highlighted that the Sankofa crude is particularly suitable for the refinery due to its light and sweet properties. The shipment is expected to yield roughly 70 million litres of gasoline, 59 million litres of gas oil, 15 million litres of aviation fuel, and a significant amount of LPG. TOR remains the only refinery in Ghana with the capacity to produce aviation turbine fuel.
