Tema Port congestion threatens Ghana's 24-hour economy

The Ghana Union of Traders' Associations (GUTA) has issued an urgent call to the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) to address severe congestion at the Port of Tema. GUTA President Clement Boateng stated that the backlog is increasing the cost of doing business and could lead to higher consumer prices.

According to GUTA, the crisis is driven by shipping lines failing to promptly discharge unstuffed empty containers at designated depots. These containers are occupying critical terminal space, which prevents stuffed containers from entering for customs examination and clearance. Additionally, some shipping lines reportedly lack the necessary logistics and infrastructure to move empty containers to their respective yards.

Truck drivers have faced queues stretching from the port entrance to the Regional Maritime University, with some waiting nearly a week to offload containers. GUTA warned that the situation could undermine the government’s 24-hour economy policy and cautioned that congestion may intensify as import volumes peak toward the end of the year.
