Tema Port officials address congestion and host Sierra Leonean delegation
Ghanaian ministers and international delegates have engaged with Tema Port to address operational challenges and facilitate regional maritime cooperation. Trade, Agribusiness and Industry Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare and Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe conducted a joint visit to the port to address severe congestion. The bottleneck is increasing the cost of clearing goods and raising import prices for consumers. As a long-term solution, the government is considering the development of Keta Port to redistribute cargo volumes.
Simultaneously, a high-level delegation from Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, led by Minister Princess Dugba, toured the Tema Port facilities. The Sierra Leonean team is studying Ghana’s port management to inform their own US$55 million industrial fishing port project. Funded by a grant from the Chinese government, the Sierra Leonean project is expected to be completed within two years and aims to bolster the nation’s blue economy and reduce post-harvest losses.
