ČEZ receives approval to use Westinghouse nuclear fuel at Temelín

The Czech State Office for Nuclear Safety (SÚJB) has granted ČEZ permission to use new nuclear fuel from the American company Westinghouse at the Temelín Nuclear Power Station. This decision follows a multi-year process involving rigorous testing, safety analyses, and compatibility assessments.

ČEZ plans to introduce the new fuel assemblies into the first reactor block during a scheduled outage at the end of this year. This move is intended to diversify fuel suppliers and reduce reliance on Russian manufacturer TVEL, thereby strengthening the Czech Republic’s energy security.

In addition to Westinghouse, ČEZ has also secured a contract with the French company Framatome for Temelín. The company is also preparing for similar licensing processes for fuel supplies at the Dukovany nuclear power plant.
