Temelín Nuclear Power Plant operations and fuel transition

The Temelín Nuclear Power Plant in the Czech Republic is undergoing operational and public engagement developments. In August 2026, the operator ČEZ announced a series of exclusive night tours scheduled for September, allowing limited groups to visit secured areas including the machine room and spent fuel storage facility.

By September 2026, the facility received authorization from the State Office for Nuclear Safety (SÚJB) to transition its nuclear fuel supply. This decision follows a multi-year process involving rigorous testing, safety analyses, and compatibility assessments. The plant will switch from Russian-manufactured TVEL fuel to assemblies supplied by the American company Westinghouse, with plans to introduce the new fuel into the first reactor block during a scheduled maintenance outage at the end of the year. CEO Daniel Beneš stated the transition is a “significant step toward strengthening the Czech Republic’s energy security and diversifying nuclear fuel suppliers.”

In addition to the Westinghouse agreement, ČEZ has secured a contract with the French company Framatome for Temelín. The operator is also preparing for similar licensing processes regarding fuel supplies for the Dukovany nuclear power plant.
