Croatia reports increase in births and expanded childcare capacity

Croatia has reported a positive shift in demographic data, with 924 more children born in the first seven months of 2026 compared to the same period last year. Notably, July saw over 3,000 births, the highest in six years. Minister of Demography and Emigration Ivan Šipić stated that while these figures should be viewed with caution due to the long-term nature of demographic trends, they indicate the positive direction of recent family support and housing policies.

Simultaneously, various regions in Croatia are expanding childcare infrastructure. In Podcrkavlje, the Bambi kindergarten has opened new nursery capacities. In Gunja, the new Dunja kindergarten has opened with a capacity for 32 children following a 1.3 million euro investment. In Zagreb, several new schools and kindergartens, including the Borovje facility featuring an indoor pool, are opening to meet demand. Additionally, the Dubrava kindergarten has increased its capacity to 134 children following significant investments.
