Greece drowning statistics highlight high risk for elderly

Drowning incidents in Greece have highlighted a significant risk to specific demographics, particularly individuals over the age of 60. Statistics from the Safe Water Sports campaign and official records indicate that approximately 80% of drowning victims in Greek waters belong to the 60+ age group. Data shows that between 2021 and 2025, an average of 387 fatal water accidents were recorded annually, with eight out of ten deaths resulting from drowning.

Recent reports note that 168 people have lost their lives to drowning so far this summer. While the elderly are most affected, there is also a noted risk for minors in swimming pools due to lack of supervision. Regional data shows Attica and Central Macedonia have recorded the highest number of incidents.

In response, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, EODY, and the Hellenic Coast Guard have supported the ‘Safe Sea for 60+’ campaign. Safety guidelines emphasize that individuals should never swim alone, should swim parallel to the shore, and should avoid swimming after consuming food or alcohol. Experts urge those with chronic cardiac or neurological conditions to follow medical advice strictly and seek immediate help if feeling unwell in the water.
