Temu, Shein and AliExpress Sunscreens Found Unsafe in European Tests

A recent investigation by the French consumer group UFC‑Que Choisir examined several sunscreens sold on low‑cost marketplaces such as Temu, Shein and AliExpress. Laboratory analysis detected a prohibited endocrine‑disrupting substance in three products and revealed that the actual sun‑protection factor (SPF) was far below the figures printed on the packaging, with some samples delivering an effective SPF of only two.

The findings prompted consumer‑protection alerts in Austria and Germany, where media outlets described the products as “catastrophic” and warned that they do not provide adequate protection against ultraviolet radiation. Experts emphasized that ineffective sunscreen can expose users to harmful UV rays, increasing the risk of skin damage and cancer. The reports have urged shoppers to verify the origin and certification of sun‑care items purchased from overseas discount platforms.

Authorities are monitoring the situation, and the consumer groups recommend using only sunscreens that meet recognized safety standards and display verifiable SPF ratings.
