Temu faces deadline for safety improvement plan after record EU fine

The European Commission has reached a deadline for Temu to submit a concrete improvement plan following a record 200 million euro fine. The penalty, the highest ever imposed under the Digital Services Act, was issued after investigations revealed the Chinese e-commerce platform failed to adequately mitigate risks regarding dangerous and illegal products.

Specific safety concerns identified by the Commission included unsafe chargers that become dangerously hot and children's toys containing toxic substances or small, choking hazards. The Commission noted that Temu’s risk assessments were insufficient, as the company relied on general industry data rather than investigating specific occurrences of prohibited items on its own platform.

Temu has characterized the fine as disproportionate and is considering an appeal to the Court of Justice of the European Union. Failure to implement effective new controls could result in additional fines from Brussels.
