Temu to pay 2,000 HUF compensation to Hungarian shoppers

Hungary’s Competition Authority (GVH) has ordered the online marketplace Temu to compensate about half a million consumers who purchased on the platform between November 2023 and September 2024. Each eligible shopper will receive a 2,000 forint rebate, with the payment details to be delivered by email through a secure link. The authority’s investigation found that Temu used misleading “discount” pricing and urgent‑tone messages that pressured consumers, and it imposed a total fine of 437 million forints on the company.

The compensation programme coincides with a noticeable decline in Temu parcel volumes shipped to Hungary after the EU’s new customs rules took effect on 1 July, which eliminated certain low‑value‑package tax exemptions. Foxpost, the local courier network, reported fewer Temu‑related shipments, a trend that may temporarily benefit domestic e‑commerce operators.

Temu will also cover any shortfall between the total compensation amount (estimated under 882 million forints) and the fine, by paying the difference into the state budget. The company has pledged to improve its consumer‑protection compliance program.
