Estado de México officials investigated for vehicle verification extortion
The Fiscalía General de Justicia del Estado de México (FGJEM) is investigating an extortion network involving public officials, former officials, and private individuals. The scheme allegedly targeted owners of vehicle verification centers in the State of Mexico.
Investigators suggest the network operated since at least December 2023. Officials from the Secretaría del Medio Ambiente allegedly conditioned essential services—including permits, revalidations, and the issuance of holograms—on the payment of illegal fees. Monthly extortion payments reportedly reached up to 200,000 pesos per center, with some owners paying between 30,000 and 100,000 pesos depending on their capacity.
Authorities have arrested Raúl N, the former general director of Atmospheric Emission Control, and Carlos Eduardo N. Raúl N faces charges of aggravated extortion, while Carlos Eduardo N is charged with abuse of authority. The criminal network reportedly aimed to collect over 430 million pesos through these illegal practices.
