Tenerife and Mexico prepare for solar eclipse and meteor shower
Multiple astronomical events are occurring on August 12, 2026. In Tenerife, a significant partial solar eclipse will take place, with the Moon expected to cover up to 75% of the solar disk. According to the National Geographic Institute (IGN), the phenomenon will begin at 18:58, reach its maximum magnitude of 0.75 at 19:53, and conclude around 20:45. Authorities have deployed over 150 Civil Guard agents to manage traffic and safety near Teide National Park, and experts emphasize the necessity of using certified ISO 12312-2 eye protection.
Simultaneously, Mexico will experience the peak of the Perseid meteor shower. Data from the National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics, and Electronics (INAOE) indicates that observers may see up to 150 meteors per hour. This shower, caused by debris from comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, is best viewed with the naked eye during the early morning hours, specifically leading up to 03:00 on August 13.
