Tenerife geothermal drilling reveals promising energy resources

Geothermal drilling in Vilaflor de Chasna, Tenerife, has reached depths of 3,001 meters, revealing promising indicators for renewable energy production. Initial findings confirm the presence of geothermal fluids, permeability, and heat, with water located approximately 1,800 meters below sea level at temperatures around 150 degrees Celsius and pressures of about 30 bars.

A public-private consortium involving the Cabildo de Tenerife (through Involcan and ITER), DISA, and the Icelandic firm Reykjavík Geothermal is managing the project. The initiative aims to secure energy sovereignty for the island. To maintain the resource, teams are currently monitoring the reservoir and injecting water to manage temperatures.

In response to these developments, the Spanish central government has pledged to develop a regulatory and tariff framework to enable the commercial exploitation of geothermal energy. This legal structure will be developed alongside ongoing drilling operations, which include planned secondary and tertiary boreholes to further assess the site's potential.
