A public-private consortium is conducting Spain’s first high-enthalpy geothermal drilling project in Vilaflor de Chasna, Tenerife. Drilling has reached depths of 3,001 meters, where researchers have confirmed the presence of heat, permeable rock, and geothermal fluids. Water was located approximately 1,800 meters below sea level at temperatures of roughly 150 degrees Celsius.

The project, managed by Energía Geotérmica de Tenerife—a consortium including the Cabildo de Tenerife, DISA, and Reykjavík Geothermal—aims to secure energy sovereignty for the island. The initiative is noted for its minimal land footprint compared to wind or solar power, which is significant for Tenerife’s protected territories.

In response to the project’s progress, the Spanish central government has pledged to create a regulatory and tariff framework to facilitate the commercial exploitation of geothermal energy. High-level officials, including the President of the Canary Islands, have visited the site to observe the integration of this new technology into the region.
