Tenerife hosts Spain's first high-enthalpy geothermal drilling project

Vilaflor de Chasna in Tenerife has become the center of a significant geological and energy milestone with the development of Spain’s first high-enthalpy geothermal drilling project. Located in the Trevejos area, researchers have detected heat, water, and permeable rock at depths exceeding 3,000 meters, confirming the presence of a stable and clean renewable energy source.

The project is being managed by a public-private consortium, Energía Geotérmica de Tenerife. Geothermal energy is noted for its minimal land footprint, requiring up to 22 times less space than wind or solar power, making it a viable option for the protected territory of Tenerife.

High-level officials, including the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, and representatives from Reykjavík Geothermal, recently visited the research site to mark the progress of the initiative. While the area remains a traditional agricultural hub known for its vineyards and livestock, the geothermal exploration marks a shift toward new technological integration in the region.
