Tenerife to host 2026 astronomy meeting during solar eclipse

Tenerife will host the 'Cielos Tenerife Nordeste 2026' astronomy meeting on August 12, 2026, at El Montillo Natural Park in La Matanza de Acentejo. The event is a collaboration between the Center for Initiatives and Tourism of Northeast Tenerife (CIT Nordeste), the local council, Turismo de Tenerife, and the Museum of Science and the Cosmos (MCC).

The gathering is timed to coincide with a partial solar eclipse, offering the public free opportunities to observe the phenomenon safely using approved glasses, telescopes, and scientific explanations. The program also includes educational workshops, family activities, and guided observations of the Perseid meteor shower and the summer sky.

Organizers aim to promote Tenerife as a premier destination for astrotourism, leveraging the island's Starlight certification for its exceptional night sky conditions. Councillor José Carlos Acha noted that the event uses scientific culture to educate and engage the public, particularly young people, while Dimple Melwani, CEO of Turismo de Tenerife, highlighted the island's ability to blend nature with educational experiences.
