Tennessee: Six-year-old girl dies after being left in school bus
A six-year-old girl with non-verbal autism, identified as Winter Jones, died after being left in a school bus for approximately eight hours in Cordova, Tennessee.
On a Thursday, the child was dropped off at the Kid University daycare center by her father. She was intended to be transported via bus to Macon-Hall Elementary School, but she never arrived at the school. The bus remained parked at the daycare lot in extreme heat, with outdoor temperatures reaching 36 degrees Celsius (97 degrees Fahrenheit).
The child was discovered lifeless by staff in the afternoon when the bus was being prepared for the return trip. Her father, Bryan Jones, reported that her body temperature reached 42.8 degrees Celsius. Her uncle noted that due to her condition, she was unable to verbally call for help or alert anyone to her presence.
Local authorities and police responded to the scene, and the child was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital. An investigation is currently underway to determine how the oversight occurred, though no charges have been filed at this time.
