Tennessee daycare vehicle fatality
Overview
A six-year-old girl, identified as Winter Jones, died after being left in a daycare van in Cordova, Tennessee, during extreme summer heat. The child, who was non-verbally autistic and unable to advocate for herself, was discovered at Kid University in the afternoon. Following the discovery, she was transported to Baptist Children's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Subsequent reports indicate the child may have been left in the vehicle for approximately eight hours. While outdoor temperatures reached approximately 97 degrees Fahrenheit (36 degrees Celsius), her father, Bryan Jones, reported that her body temperature had reached 42.8 degrees Celsius (109 degrees Fahrenheit) at the time of the incident. Her uncle noted that her neurological condition prevented her from being able to verbally call for help or alert anyone to her presence while she was being transported from Kid University daycare to Macon Hall Elementary School.
The Memphis Police Department and the Tennessee Department of Children's Services are investigating the circumstances of the death, specifically how the child was not noticed missing and why the vehicle remained unmonitored for such an extended period. The Memphis Shelby County School Board has also expressed its intention to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. While investigations are ongoing, no charges have been filed at this time. A candlelight vigil was held in Memphis to honor Winter Jones.
