Tenova to supply giant electric arc furnace for HKM steel plant in Duisburg

Italian engineering firm Tenova has been contracted to deliver a 285‑tonne electric arc furnace (EAF) for Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann (HKM) in Duisburg, Germany. The furnace will feature continuous scrap feeding via Consteel technology and an electromagnetic stirring system co‑developed with ABB, enabling a production rate of 380 tonnes of liquid steel per hour and an annual capacity of 2.5 million tonnes.

The new EAF is the centerpiece of HKM’s shift from traditional blast‑furnace steelmaking to a lower‑carbon, electricity‑based process, aiming to markedly reduce CO₂ emissions at the site. The plant is slated for commissioning by 2029, with state subsidies supporting the transition. Investment details and the exact start‑up date were not disclosed.
