Salzgitter advances HKM decarbonization and reports H1 2026

Overview

Following its July 2026 acquisition of Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann (HKM), Salzgitter AG has moved forward with its decarbonization strategy at the Duisburg site. The company has ordered the construction of Germany’s largest electric arc furnace (EAF) from engineering firm Tenova. The 285-tonne unit will feature continuous scrap feeding via Consteel technology and an electromagnetic stirring system co-developed with ABB. Designed to produce up to 2.5 million tonnes of crude steel annually—with a target of 2 million tonnes of low-carbon steel—the furnace is central to supplying green steel to automotive and appliance manufacturers. The project, supported by approximately €200 million in federal and state climate-action subsidies, is scheduled for commissioning in 2029.

On 10 August 2026, Salzgitter reported its half-year results, showing a pre-tax profit of €76.3 million. This marks a recovery from the €83.8 million loss recorded in the first half of 2025. The performance was driven by improved results in steel production, trading, and technology units, as well as a €97 million contribution from the P28 profit improvement program and high earnings from its stake in Aurubis AG. However, external sales saw a marginal decrease to €4.6 billion, compared to €4.7 billion the previous year, as geopolitical uncertainties in the Middle East impacted steel-related activities.
