Strait of Hormuz maritime attacks intensify as tanker struck

Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have escalated following a series of attacks on commercial vessels. On October 21, the Kuwait-flagged oil product tanker M/T Al Dasma, carrying 21 Indian seafarers, was struck by an unknown projectile while transiting the strait. The strike, located 11 nautical miles west of Bukha, Oman, triggered a fire that was subsequently extinguished. All crew members, including the 21 Indian nationals, were reported safe.

This incident follows another strike on a tanker approximately 30 nautical miles off the coast of Al Faw, Iraq, on Tuesday. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) reports that approximately 24 ships have been attacked in roughly two weeks. The ongoing conflict has resulted in the deaths of 24 seafarers since February 28.

The maritime crisis has significant economic implications, as the Strait of Hormuz typically handles about 20 per cent of global oil and gas supplies. Beyond energy, the disruption affects the trade of aluminum and fertilizers, potentially impacting global food security and industrial supply chains. Currently, approximately 6,000 seafarers remain trapped near the strait due to safety concerns.
