Tenzing biopic explores historic Mount Everest expedition
The new biopic ‘Tenzing’, directed by Jennifer Peedom, explores the life of Tenzing Norgay, one of the first two individuals to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953. The film portrays Norgay’s journey from a community that viewed his ambitions as foolish to his eventual success alongside Sir Edmund Hillary.
Genden Phuntsok stars as Norgay, highlighting the Sherpa perspective and the necessity of mountaineering for survival. The narrative also addresses the challenges Norgay faced, including systemic racism and the social dynamics of the 1953 British expedition led by John Hunt, portrayed by Willem Dafoe.
The film aims to provide visibility to the Sherpa people and their historical contributions to mountaineering, illustrating both the personal perseverance required to overcome adversity and the colonial tensions present during the historic expedition.
