Teramo mourns biologist Marco Di Marcello killed in Nepal avalanche

Hundreds of people gathered in Teramo, Italy, to hold a final farewell for Marco Di Marcello, a 27-year-old biologist and mountaineer who died in Nepal. The commemoration included a wake at the Parco della Scienza and a funeral at the Cathedral, attended by local officials including the mayors of Teramo and Castellalto, and the Prefect of Teramo.

Di Marcello disappeared on November 3, 2025, when an international expedition was struck by an avalanche on the slopes of Dolma Khang (Yalung Ri) in Nepal. Following months of searching, his body was recovered and identified in August. His ashes were subsequently returned to Italy after cremation in Nepal.

During the ceremonies, family and friends honored his passion for nature and mountains. In a departure from traditional mourning, the family requested that attendees bring smiles and bright colors instead of flowers to celebrate his energy. Tenjing Phurba Sherpa, the expedition leader and a close friend of Di Marcello, attended to share memories of the climber.
