Terminal Cuenca del Plata strike halts operations at Montevideo Port

Operations at the Terminal Cuenca del Plata (TCP) in the Port of Montevideo were paralyzed this Saturday due to a surprise strike organized by the TCP-Nelsury union. The work stoppage, which lasted from 13:00 to 23:00, was announced immediately after a vessel completed its docking maneuver, leaving the ship stranded at the terminal during the shutdown.

The labor dispute stems from the expiration of a collective bargaining agreement on May 31. The union represents approximately 550 workers and is demanding wage increases that exceed minimums set over 20 years ago, as well as progress on infrastructure projects intended to establish the port as a regional hub. The union has declared permanent assembly, citing a lack of good faith negotiations from the company.

Terminal Cuenca del Plata has rejected accusations of bad faith, stating they have recently presented a proposal that included improvements to several union demands. The company warned that if these surprise strikes persist, it will pursue administrative and legal actions to determine responsibilities and claim damages for the resulting disruptions.
