Terminal Cuenca del Plata withdraws from Montevideo port labor talks

Negotiations between Terminal Cuenca del Plata (TCP) and the labor union at the Port of Montevideo have stalled after the company unilaterally decided to withdraw from the bargaining process. The breakdown occurred after the workers' union, Supra, presented a counterproposal that expanded their list of demands from three to seven points.

A central point of contention involves guaranteed daily wages. The union is seeking a mechanism where a broader range of workers can access a set number of guaranteed workdays, even if they are not effectively worked. TCP expressed concern regarding the potential for excessive costs associated with such a mechanism.

The labor dispute has led to operational suspensions and assemblies, causing significant delays in cargo flow and forcing the rescheduling of vessel calls. These disruptions have raised alarms within the foreign trade sector due to rising logistical costs. The union has not ruled out further industrial actions to press their demands.
