Tesla seeks EU approval for FSD with proposed name and speed changes

Tesla is seeking widespread approval for its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system across the European Union. To facilitate this, the company has proposed several concessions to address regulatory concerns. These include rebranding the system to ‘Tesla Assisted Driving’ to avoid being misleading and limiting the ‘speed offset’ function so that vehicles may only exceed speed limits by a maximum of 10 percent.

Germany has emerged as a key supporter of the technology. German Transport Minister Steffen Bilger announced that after discussions with Tesla, he would advocate for prompt EU-wide approval. This support follows an agreement where Tesla agreed to the name change and the speed limit adjustments. While eight European countries, including the Netherlands, Belgium, and Croatia, have already granted approval, a unified EU-wide decision remains pending.

The European Technical Committee for Motor Vehicles has postponed its vote on the matter until December. Some member states, such as Sweden and France, have expressed reservations regarding the speed offset feature and overall safety. Meanwhile, Tesla continues to demonstrate the system's capabilities, including recent footage of the technology navigating snowy conditions in Switzerland.
