Tesla cancels Cybertruck launch in Australia and New Zealand

Tesla has officially canceled plans to release its Cybertruck electric pickup in Australia and New Zealand, ending a seven-year period of customer reservations. The company has begun notifying customers via email and will issue full refunds of the $150 deposits within 30 days of receiving confirmation details.

The decision stems from significant technical, regulatory, and economic hurdles. Key challenges include the need for right-hand drive configurations to suit local road standards, which would require costly engineering adjustments at Tesla's Texas factory. Additionally, the vehicle's massive dimensions and stainless steel body design face scrutiny regarding local safety regulations, particularly concerning pedestrian protection and weight limits.

To mitigate customer disappointment, Tesla has offered some affected buyers a free 12-month subscription to its Full Self-Driving software, provided they purchase a new Model 3 or Model Y. However, this offer is not available to those who have already purchased other Tesla vehicles.
