Tesla Cybertruck international market challenges
Overview
Tesla has officially discontinued plans to launch the Cybertruck in Australia and New Zealand. Following seven years of customer reservations, the company notified holders via email that “plans to produce Cybertruck for Australia and New Zealand have been discontinued.” The decision follows significant technical, regulatory, and economic hurdles, including the necessity for costly engineering adjustments to produce right-hand drive configurations at Tesla’s Texas factory. Additionally, the vehicle’s dimensions and stainless steel body design face scrutiny regarding local safety regulations, specifically concerning weight limits and pedestrian protection.
Tesla is issuing full refunds of $150 deposits within 30 days. To mitigate disappointment, the company is offering a one-year subscription to Full Self-Driving (Supervised) to customers who transition their orders to a Model 3 or Model Y, though this offer is unavailable to those who have already purchased other Tesla vehicles.
In Europe, the vehicle faces regulatory hurdles. In Germany, a Cybertruck with Polish registration was intercepted by police on the A99 motorway near Vaterstetten. The vehicle’s gross weight of 4,200 kilograms exceeded the 3.5-ton limit for standard Class B driver's licenses, resulting in the driver being prohibited from continuing the journey without a Class C1 license. Reports indicate the Cybertruck is not officially approved for road use in Germany because it fails to meet several European safety regulations. In the recent Bavarian incident, the 50-year-old Swedish driver was unable to proceed, and the vehicle was subsequently impounded at the Hohenbrunn police station until a driver with the appropriate credentials can be provided.
