Tesla discontinues Solar Roof as Chinese firms target EV solar glass

Tesla has reportedly discontinued its Solar Roof product, shifting its focus toward conventional solar panels. The decision follows years of production challenges and high costs. While Elon Musk originally aimed for 1,000 installations per week, reports indicate that only approximately 3,000 systems were installed in the United States since the product's launch in 2016.

Industry reports suggest the product was not financially viable due to high installation prices and technical complexities. Tesla's website has already begun redirecting Solar Roof inquiries to its standard solar panel pages. The company is expected to continue investing in traditional solar technology, including a planned factory near Houston, Texas.

As Tesla exits the integrated solar tile market, Chinese companies are moving to fill the gap. Fuyao Glass, a global leader in automotive glass, has announced it has the capacity to mass-produce solar roofs with integrated photovoltaic cells for electric vehicles. This technology is expected to be featured on upcoming BYD models, such as the Han and Tang, providing supplemental power to vehicle systems.
