Tesla discontinuation of Solar Roof product
Overview
Tesla is discontinuing its Solar Roof product, the photovoltaic tile system first unveiled by Elon Musk in 2016. Reports indicate the company has informed its network of certified third-party installers that the tiles can no longer be ordered, and the product has been removed from Tesla’s official website, with pages redirecting to standard solar panel offerings.
The decision follows long-standing operational and financial difficulties. Despite initial goals of 1,000 installations per week, peak deployment rates were estimated at only 21 to 32 installations per week, with approximately 3,000 systems installed in the United States over seven years. Internal assessments cited high installation costs, complex labor requirements, and production scaling difficulties as reasons for the product’s lack of financial viability.
Moving forward, Tesla is expected to focus its energy portfolio on conventional solar panels, Powerwall home storage, and Megapack large-scale storage systems, including a planned factory near Houston, Texas.
As Tesla exits the integrated solar tile market, Chinese firms are targeting the sector. Fuyao Glass, a global leader in automotive glass, has announced it has the capacity to mass-produce solar roofs with integrated photovoltaic cells for electric vehicles. This technology is expected to be featured on upcoming BYD models, such as the Han and Tang, to provide supplemental power to vehicle systems.
