Tesla discontinues Solar Roof program
Tesla is discontinuing its Solar Roof program, the product featuring solar cells integrated directly into roofing tiles. According to sources close to the matter, the company has concluded that the product is not financially viable. While Tesla has not issued an official press release, the company has removed the Solar Roof dedicated webpage and is now redirecting visitors to its standard solar panel offerings.
The Solar Roof was originally unveiled by Elon Musk in 2016, shortly before Tesla's acquisition of SolarCity. Despite ambitious targets to reach 1,000 installations per week, the product struggled with industrial scaling and production delays. At its peak, installation rates were reported to be between 21 and 32 roofs per week, significantly below the company's stated goals. Approximately 3,000 systems have been installed in the United States over the past seven years.
