Tesla expands Powershare Home Backup to Model 3 and Model Y

Tesla Energy has expanded its Powershare Home Backup feature to the Model 3 and Model Y, allowing these vehicles to provide emergency power to homes during grid outages. Previously, this capability was exclusive to the Cybertruck.

To utilize the feature, owners must have a Powerwall 3 paired with either a Universal Wall Connector or a Wall Connector 3 and a bidirectional inverter. Tesla estimates that a Model 3 or Model Y can provide more than two days of backup for a typical American household using an average of 30 kWh per day, assuming a 90% charge.

The feature is guaranteed for all new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered in the United States and Puerto Rico on or after October 1, 2026. For vehicles ordered before this date, eligibility may vary. While the expansion adds significant capacity to home energy systems, certain Powershare Grid Support features remain limited to the Cybertruck in specific markets.
