Tesla expands Powershare V2H to Model 3 and Model Y

Overview

Tesla has expanded its Powershare Home Backup feature, a Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) capability that allows electric vehicles to provide emergency power to residences during grid outages.

The feature initially launched for Cybertruck owners, integrating the vehicle’s high-voltage battery with the Powerwall 3 home energy storage system. Tesla noted that combining a Cybertruck with a Powerwall 3 could extend backup capacity by more than three days.

In October 2026, Tesla Energy expanded the Powershare functionality to include Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in the United States and Puerto Rico. This expansion applies to all new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered on or after October 1, 2026, though eligibility for older vehicles may vary. To utilize this service, owners require a Powerwall 3 paired with a bidirectional inverter and either a Tesla Universal Wall Connector or a Gen 3 Wall Connector.

Tesla estimates that a Model 3 or Model Y at a 90% charge can provide over two days of backup for a typical American household, assuming an average daily usage of 30 kWh. The setup is rated for a maximum continuous output of 11.52 kilowatts. While the V2H capability has been broadened, certain Powershare Grid Support features remain limited to the Cybertruck in specific markets.
