Tesla expands unsupervised robotaxi service across Austin metro area

Tesla announced that its unsupervised (driverless) robotaxi fleet now operates throughout the Austin, Texas metropolitan region. The company said roughly 50 Tesla robotaxis are active in the city, where the service has been running for about a year, though some riders have experienced wait times exceeding 30 minutes. Tesla’s rollout follows earlier launches in Dallas and Houston and is part of CEO Elon Musk’s plan to have fully autonomous vehicles operating nationwide by 2026.

Local officials noted that Waymo, Alphabet’s autonomous‑vehicle unit, fields more than 250 robotaxis in the same market, highlighting the competitive landscape for driverless ride‑hailing in Texas.
