Tesla faces landmark California trial over systemic racism allegations

A landmark civil rights trial has commenced against Tesla regarding allegations of systemic racism at its flagship Fremont assembly factory in California. The California Civil Rights Department alleges that dozens of Black employees were subjected to years of severe workplace harassment and discriminatory treatment.

Evidence presented during opening statements includes photos and court documents showing white supremacist symbols, such as swastikas and Confederate flags, carved into or displayed within the factory. Employees reported being targeted with racial slurs and threatening messages, including ‘Go back to Africa’ and ‘You want to hang from a tree?’

The lawsuit also claims structural inequality, alleging that Black workers received lower wages, inferior job assignments, and fewer opportunities for advancement compared to their peers. While these complaints date back to 2012, the current legal action was filed in 2022.

Tesla has denied all wrongdoing, describing the lawsuit as ‘misguided’ and suggesting the company is the victim. Defense attorney Tyree Jones argued that certain racial slurs were used among workers as casual greetings rather than insults. As this is a bench trial, Judge Peter Borkon will determine if Tesla violated California’s civil rights laws. A ruling in favor of the state could force the company to fundamentally overhaul its labor and human resources policies.
