Tesla faces racial discrimination trial over Fremont factory allegations

Tesla is currently undergoing a bench trial in Alameda County Superior Court following a 2022 lawsuit by the California Civil Rights Department. The state alleges that Black workers at the company’s Fremont, California, factory were subjected to pervasive racial harassment, including the use of racial slurs and racist graffiti, as well as systemic discrimination regarding pay, job assignments, and promotions.

During opening arguments, Tesla attorney Tyree P. Jones Jr. argued that the use of the N-word can function as a ‘term of respect and endearment’ within certain contexts, citing musical influences to distinguish its usage. However, testimony from former employee Ryan Edwards described instances of being targeted with racial slurs and facing retaliation after reporting incidents to management.

The lawsuit further alleges that Black employees were disproportionately assigned to physically demanding, lower-level roles and earned significantly less than white workers. An analysis cited by the agency indicated that between June 2018 and June 2024, Black workers earned an average of $1,533 less per month than their white counterparts. Tesla maintains it has policies against misconduct and disciplines employees who violate them.
