Tesla faces regulatory scrutiny over self-driving features

Tesla is facing increased scrutiny regarding its autonomous driving capabilities. In Europe, the company has stopped using the term “self-driving” for its “Full Self-Driving” feature following regulatory feedback that a human driver must remain alert and behind the wheel.

In the United States, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating reports of Tesla robotaxis speeding through school zones. This follows existing investigations into the company’s self-driving mode and the design of the Cybercab, which lacks traditional controls such as pedals, mirrors, and a steering wheel.

Public concern regarding driver distraction has also surfaced through viral social media content. Videos have emerged showing drivers consuming large meals while operating vehicles in “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” mode. While some users claim they remain responsible for monitoring the road, the footage has drawn criticism regarding road safety and the potential for misuse of the technology.
