Tesla FSD Supervised faces EU regulatory delays and mixed regional approvals
Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system is seeing a fragmented rollout across Europe. The Czech Republic became the seventh EU nation to recognize the system's provisional approval on September 21, 2026, joining countries like the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Lithuania, and Slovenia.
However, a bloc-wide expansion faces regulatory hurdles. The European Union's Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles (TCMV) has postponed a potential vote on extending the Dutch national approval to all 27 member states. Originally expected in early October, the decision is now delayed until December 2026, as the committee has only scheduled a discussion rather than a formal vote.
Achieving EU-wide approval requires a qualified majority of 15 member states representing 65% of the EU population. Currently, support is limited to seven nations representing roughly 12% of the population. Major economies, including France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, have expressed concerns regarding driver attention and speed limit adherence. Safety testing by the Belgian group Johanna.be highlighted issues where the system exceeded 30 km/h limits in Brussels, averaging 44 km/h.
In response to the EU delay, Tesla is reportedly pursuing bilateral negotiations with individual nations, such as Ireland, to secure national-level permits.
