Tesla FSD faces scrutiny in Europe over speed limit violations

Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised system is facing scrutiny in Europe following tests conducted by the Belgian road safety group Johanna.be. During a three-day test covering 400 km in Brussels, the system was found to frequently exceed speed limits. Specifically, the software exceeded the 30 km/h limit in 55 percent of tested segments, averaging 44 km/h, and exceeded 20 km/h limits in residential areas in 42 percent of cases.

The investigation revealed a discrepancy between the vehicle's camera recognition and its internal display. While cameras often correctly identified speed signs, the driver's display frequently showed incorrect limits, such as 50 km/h in 30 km/h zones, leading to potential driver confusion. Additionally, the system was observed attempting illegal overtaking maneuvers on designated cyclist streets.

These findings come at a critical time as the European Union prepares for a vote on whether to grant block-wide approval for FSD technology. While countries like the Netherlands, Belgium, and the Czech Republic have already granted individual permissions, a unified EU decision has been delayed, with the next major opportunity for a vote expected in December. Authorities emphasize that despite the assistance, the human driver remains 100 percent responsible for the vehicle's actions and compliance with traffic laws.
