Tesla keeps US EV market lead while Hyundai Ioniq 5 rises to third place
In the first half of 2026, U.S. electric‑vehicle sales reached about 463,000 units, with Tesla accounting for roughly 50 % of the market. The Model Y remained the top seller with 163,454 units, and the Model 3 stayed in second place with 66,616 units. Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 moved into third place, selling 20,730 vehicles – a 9 % year‑to‑date increase that lifted it above rivals such as Ford’s Mustang Mach‑E.
GM’s Chevrolet brand ranked fourth with 28,267 units and Toyota’s bZ series fifth with 17,533 units. The data show modest growth in overall EV demand despite the expiration of the federal $7,500 tax credit, and indicate that competition is expanding as new models from Rivian, BMW, Ford and Kia are slated to enter the market later in the year.
