Tesla rebrands Full Self-Driving as Assisted Driving in Europe

Tesla has officially rebranded its driver-assistance software in Europe, changing the name from ‘Full Self-Driving (Supervised)’ to ‘Tesla Assisted Driving’. This strategic shift follows significant pressure from German regulators, specifically the Federal Ministry of Transport, which argued that the previous name was ‘somewhat misleading’ as the system requires constant human supervision and does not perform the entire driving task.

As part of a constructive agreement with Germany, Tesla has also agreed to technical adjustments, including a limit that allows the system to exceed posted speed limits by a maximum of ten percent. This move is seen as a tactical step to facilitate broader regulatory approval across the European Union, with a key EU-wide vote expected in December.

Currently, the system is already approved in eight European countries, including the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Czechia, and Croatia. Slovakia is expected to become the ninth approved nation shortly. While the rebranding changes the marketing terminology to emphasize driver responsibility, the underlying technical capabilities of the software remain largely unchanged.
