Tesla Cybercab robotaxi specs unveiled as fleet use remains limited
Regulatory filings submitted to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reveal that Tesla’s upcoming Cybercab robotaxi is equipped with a 48 kWh battery pack, a front‑mounted permanent‑magnet motor delivering about 163 kW (≈222 hp), and a curb weight of roughly 1,412 kg. The two‑seat vehicle, which lacks a steering wheel and pedals, is rated for an EPA‑estimated range of over 400 miles (about 673 km) and carries a maximum speed of 400 V with 270 kW fast‑charging capability. Production started in April at Giga Texas, and the model is intended for autonomous ride‑hailing services.
Despite the technical rollout, Tesla’s robotaxi fleet is operating far below its projected scale. Data from the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles show the company holds permits for 42 driver‑less vehicles, yet only about 31 Tesla robotaxis have been seen on the road in the past week, with just 14 running without a human safety driver. Active units are concentrated in Austin (16), Dallas (7), Houston (3), and the Bay Area (5 supervised). The low mileage explains why the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recorded no at‑fault robotaxi crashes – the fleet is simply not being used extensively. Tesla has cited pending software updates as the reason for the delayed expansion, pushing broader deployment to 2026‑2027.
